What if the Bible serves a purpose beyond being a mere account of past events?
In a world where questions about the authenticity and relevance of religious texts like the Bible persist, it’s worth considering the idea that the Bible’s intrinsic value may not solely rest on its historicity. What if the Bible serves a purpose beyond being a mere account of past events? What if its true purpose is to serve as a guide, a “mind-map” of sorts, on our journey to understanding God?
A Chiasm of Spiritual Evolution
The chiasm—a literary structure where concepts are presented and then revisited in reverse order—offers a lens through which we can explore this evolutionary journey:
- Eden: The beginning, a state of innocence and oneness with nature.
- Tree of Life: Symbol of eternal life and divine wisdom.
- Knowledge of Good and Evil: The awakening of moral understanding.
- Law in Stone: The codification of moral rules.
- Law in Text (OT): Additions, interpretations, and distortions over time.
- Law in Flesh: The embodiment of divine law in human form.
- Law in Text (NT): Additions, interpretations, and distortions over time.
- Law in Metaphor: Understanding the divine through parables and allegory.
- Knowledge of Discernment: The wisdom to separate good from evil in shades of gray.
- Tree of Man: Our collective contributions to science and wisdom.
- Return to the Garden: A new Eden formed by collective human wisdom applied to the Whole Earth.
The Divine in All Forms
Even if the Bible is considered a work of fiction, this in no way diminishes its role as a guide to spiritual and moral understanding. God, in this sense, becomes an all-encompassing entity, embodying truth, metaphor, parable, allegory, and even humor with a knee-slapping tale or two. It teaches us to approach the divine in every form it can take, encouraging us to expand our horizons of understanding.
The Collective Voice of Humanity
In this new Eden, every human being has a voice. The wisdom we have amassed through the ages, now aided by collective discernmen if we can use it, helps us decide which “fruits” to cultivate. It brings us full circle, back to a garden of wisdom enriched by human experience, but now shaped and curated by our collective understanding guided by the Word.
The Next Step
The task that lies ahead is discerning which fruit to harvest and cultivate. The goal? To rebuild Eden, but this time, as a shared space where all of mankind can co-exist in wisdom and harmony.
In this way, the Bible serves not as a relic of the past but as a dynamic guide to a more enlightened future. It becomes our role to discern God’s will as suggested in the Bible, as “written” in universal ideals.
By understanding our spiritual journey through this chiasm, we can better appreciate the evolving nature of our quest for divine wisdom and our role in shaping a new Eden.
May all Flourish in His Light.
